Language and habits at the time of the VOC are very different from now. Venus Oil was a much consumed beverage in some coastal areas of China and was used as a stimulant.

Amsterdam liquor distillers prepared in line with the Chinese equivalent an similar product.

The raw materials came from the Far East: cloves, cardamon, fragrant flowers, pomegranate, etc.
